It’s almost summer (with temperatures already feeling that way!). Time for pool parties, backyard barbeques – and home maintenance. So, get your home ready for the hottest months of the year with our summer home maintenance checklist.

Inspect air conditioners

Make sure your air conditioner is in tip-top shape before switching it on for its busiest season. Clean the fan by turning off the AC unit, removing the frame and fan motor, and dusting the fan with a slightly damp rag. Also keep the drain line from clogging by cleaning it with bleach. If you have central air, consider hiring a professional cleaning service.

Clean the AC filter every two weeks throughout the summer, especially if you use it frequently. Use a vacuum cleaner or run the filter under warm water. Replace the filter every one to three months. Did you know that, as part of our general handyman services, we handle our customers’ HVAC needs?

Clean the furnace filter

Also clean your furnace filter before turning it off for the summer. Turn off the power to the furnace, find the service door, and wash or replace the filter. Or, contact us online or by calling 704-858-2141.

Wash exterior windows

Warm weather makes for the perfect time to clean the outside of your windows. Because window exteriors rarely get cleaned, you may need soap and water (plus plenty of elbow grease) to get rid of a year’s worth of grime and sediment.

Clean windows screens

While you’re paying attention to your windows, take the opportunity to clean or repair your window screens. Take out all windows screens and wash them in warm soapy water. Then check for tears. Small tears can be repaired with super glue, while those longer than an inch may require a screen patch.

Check hoses and faucets for leaks

Go through your home and inspect all interior and exterior faucets and hoses for leaks or cracking. Make sure to check the hoses on your lawn irrigation system, washer, dishwasher, refrigerator and toilets, and proactively replace all hoses every three to five years.

Clean and repair your driveway and walkways

If your driveway or walkway has seen better days, it may be time to act. Wash away the year’s dirt with a pressure washer, then inspect the concrete or asphalt for cracks and holes. Minor cracks can be repaired with concrete repair caulk or asphalt crack sealer. For older driveways, consider a concrete resurfacer or asphalt sealer. And, yes. We’re the experts in concrete work, so contact us for help.

Clean your home exterior

Dirt, mold, moss, mud and other accumulated grime make your home look unsightly and can even lead to more insidious home problems. If your house is dirty enough and has sturdy shingles, consider using a pressure washer. For lighter dirt or more delicate shingles, a garden hose or soft washing service is sufficient to keep your home exterior looking good. If you need to repair or replace siding, contact us!

Paint touch-ups

Once your home is spic and span, you may need to touch up some areas of paint. Annual touch-ups prevent peeling and keep out moisture. Inspect your home for any bubbling or peeling paint, buy the right paint color, then scrape, prime and repaint the damaged areas. And, by now, you know the routine. Contact us for your painting needs.
